The brief

Build a procedural asset (modular wall, rock scatter, or pipe run) as an HDA with no more than 8 exposed parameters. It must fail gracefully on bad input and produce game-ready output with UVs and correct pivots.

Deliverable: A packaged digital asset with a designed parameter interface, validation, and documentation another artist can follow unaided.

Starter assets

An empty Geometry node. Decide your asset's single job in one sentence before you build anything — scope creep is the main failure mode here.

Performance budget

  • Cook time under 2 seconds at default parameters.
  • Output under 20k triangles at default settings.
  • 8 exposed parameters or fewer.

Engine instructions

Build in a Geometry node, then Create Digital Asset. Use the Type Properties editor for the parameter interface, `error()`/`warning()` in a Python or VEX node for validation, and version the HDA definition on every save.

Milestones

MILESTONE 01

Define the contract

Write down the input (what geometry or curve the artist supplies), the output (game-ready mesh with what attributes), and the one sentence describing the asset's job.

CHECKPOINT A written contract exists before any nodes are built.
MILESTONE 02

Build the core network

Get the geometry generating correctly with hard-coded values first. Do not expose anything yet.

CHECKPOINT The network produces correct geometry with hard-coded values.
MILESTONE 03

Promote and design the interface

Promote only the parameters an artist genuinely needs. Group them, name them in artist language, set ranges and defaults, and add tooltips.

CHECKPOINT 8 or fewer parameters, all with ranges, defaults and tooltips.
MILESTONE 04

Validate input

Add checks for missing input, degenerate curves and zero-scale. Emit a readable node warning or error instead of cooking garbage.

CHECKPOINT Feeding empty and degenerate input produces a clear message, not a crash or silent empty output.
MILESTONE 05

Game-ready output

Add UVs, set the pivot, name the material groups, and triangulate or keep quads according to your target engine. Verify the import.

CHECKPOINT The exported asset imports into the target engine with correct scale, pivot and UVs.
MILESTONE 06

Document and hand off

Write a one-page usage doc with a parameter table, two example configurations and the known limitations. Have someone else use it without your help.

CHECKPOINT Another person produced a valid result from the doc alone.

Troubleshooting

Cook time balloons as parameters increase.
Find the node whose cost scales worst — usually a copy/scatter or boolean — and cap the driving count or switch to packed primitives.
Artists keep producing broken results.
Your interface exposes internals. Reduce parameter count, rename in artist language, and clamp ranges to valid values.
Pivot is wrong on import.
Transform the geometry so the intended pivot is at the origin before export, rather than relying on engine-side offsets.
UVs overlap after the procedural step.
UV after the last topology-changing node, or carry UVs through with attribute transfer.
